Slap my momma? You ask. Well let me put it like this: When I eat something so good that I love it immediately and know for sure that I’ll be coming back for more one of my favorite sayings is that it makes me want to slap my momma. So, that’s exactly what I named the site. It is my hope that I’m not the only one reading this mix of thoughts, photos, reviews, recipes, and whateverelsecomesouthere. I hope I am able to inspire you to think about slapping somebody you love as well. ;)
I am also considering the crazy notion of having multiple blogs. We’ll see if that ever comes to fruition. I’m gonna need to concentrate on this one first. I’ve promised myself that I will not spread myself too thin on this blogging bit. I want to thank my friend Laila for naming this first blog. I think she was joking but I loved the name on first sight. So here you have it…Sir Food-A-Lot! Yes, I think it’s perfect for a guy who came up through the 80s, listening to hip-hop and eating great food in my Grandma’s kitchen. Somehow, that all comes together for me in Sir Food-A-Lot. Maybe I’m the only one who gets that and if so I don’t care, I still like it! If nothing else I hope you’ll see the humor in the name and realize that I’m not going to take myself too seriously so neither should you.
I have been considering a blog for quite a while now (this should not raise your expectation as to the quality of what you are about to read) but could not think of a name nor was I making the time to write. Then I went to brunch with Nichole (my beautiful wife) last Sunday. This isn’t abnormal behavior on our part but this week we ventured out of our normal pastures and I found myself enjoying one of the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever tasted. This sandwich was on a deliciously crisp roll served with a beautiful fried egg over pork cheeks and two slices of heirloom tomato. The basil aioli brought it together and each bite made me want to slap somebody! (Now you understand?) If you enjoy perfectly cooked, incredibly tender pork then I strongly recommend making reservations at The Publican on Fulton.
I guess I should also add that most of the restaurants that I will discuss here will be in Chicago. Well, I do live here so it makes sense, right? On occasion, as we travel if something makes my right hand twitch in the old familiar way, I may write something about a restaurant, meal or other random experience outside of this wonderful city. It isn’t that I don’t love many cities and fares from all over but there is so much to discover here in the Second City that I’d be crazy not to share as much as possible.
You may have also picked up on the fact that I like to cook. I did mention the possibilities of recipes earlier, in case you were skimming too quickly. Well, I hope to post some photos of the meals I create (these two on the right here for starters) and I’ll tell you a little about how they come out. If you have suggestions I’d be happy to hear them. I’m a hobbyist with aspirations of being a damn good cook. So any help or thoughts you share will be appreciated.
Yes sir! I am anxious to see what you share with this space. I don't want to put too much pressure on this blog but I think you should add a hint of hip-hop when you can. -Donald D
